Much Talk but Will Mugabe Walk?
Why do despotic African leaders feel the need to continue on the ride of national destruction, tyranny, mis-management and greed until the wheels fall off?
Within the last week, Barack Obama has condemened – not denounced, but CONDEMED- the brutality of Mugabe and his government. Queen Elizabeth has stripped the man of his knighthood- which is a BIG DEAL to the Brits. In fact, Mugabe is the first foreigner to be stripped of the award since Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in 1989, the day before his execution. Hmm, telling no?
Now Nelson Mandela has added his opinions to the international discussion, noting the “the tragic failure of leadership” of President Robert Mugabe.
But what do the condemnations and stripping of titles mean? People are talking, but who is doing? Why hasn’t this man been dealt with? Is it true that because there is no oil in Zimbabwe, it isn’t strategically important, therefore can go up in smoke should it so like? What do we have international bodies- the UN, The AU, etc- if not to take care of tyrants like Mugabe?
If I could lend one piece of advice to Zimbabwe’s “leader” it would be this: Learn from history- Idi Amin, Sani Abache, etc. Don’t wait until your own people expel you- either to exile, or to death. Oppressed people can only take so much destruction and abuse before they revolt in a way that undoubtedly changes the scope of their societies. You have been warned.
