What is afiive?

afiive.com is contemporary Africa’s virtual lounge. The online spot to come, get comfortable and engage in the wonderfulness of community, connections and culture.

Why afiive?

Back in 2007, when afiive was created, nothing like it existed. People had to connect via their local community groups, clubs at school and work, maybe a few Facebook groups/MySpace pages, but mainly via their own personal networks. Afiive presented an opportunity to bridge the gap and connect all these groups on a larger scale. To give people a space to vibe with other, from your neighbor to people all over the world, on things that are interesting, relevant, funny, positive, concerning, creative or downright ridiculous – yet African. A spot to learn, be informed, trade, promote and experience Africa’s contributions. It’s art, creativity, engagement, function and necessity all rolled up into this little blogsite.

Who’s behind afiive and where did the name originate?

There are loads of people who’ve been involved in the formation of this site, the brand and movement but afiive was founded by me, Lola Adeyemo, in July ‘07. It started off as ‘africannect’ but after a determination that we needed something more unique to adequately represent what the site is about and the diversity of the people who visit it, we came up with the term afiive. Short, sexy, and different. Love at first sound.

What is your dream for afiive?

My dream is that people take this platform and run with it. That artists use it to spread their music. That traders and creative’s use it to promote their work. That people use it to dialogue on news and opinion. That readers use it to highlight their contributions and those of their friends who are doing amazing things in the community. That organizations use it to tap into the PLETHORA of talents and skills abundant in those who visit this site. That volunteers use it to reach out and enhance their own efforts. Ultimately, that people are vocal and participative and make this their own.

Final takeaway?

Afiive is dedicated to highlighting and promoting perspectives of Africa, Africans and friends of the continent; perspectives that you seldom get to see, talking less of hear about. We’re living in the greatest of times. The barriers to connections are so low; the opportunities to get involved and engage are so vast and plentiful. There’s power in the collective and with a concerted effort and by simply connecting, we can make impossible things, possible. Afiive is a very small, microscopic attempt to change the game and be apart of the movement that alters the way the global community sees Africa and ultimately, how Africa sees itself.

We’re out to totally disrupt the status quo. And impact the world. One interaction at a time.

Welcome home.
