afriTV: Celtel Innovation
When it comes to cellular innovation and technology, not only is Africa a leader, but it continues to set the trends and industry benchmarks. This video highlights the beginnings of Celtel’s* borderless network (the world’s first), which allows its cellular subscribers to make calls across 10+ countries in Africa without roaming fees. The list of participating countries has grown to include: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Chad, Malawi, Niger, Nigeria and Sudan.
Sounds cool doesn’t it? and we all know how much Africans like to talk
* As of August 1, 2008, the Celtel brand was dropped and all of its operations re-branded to the parent company, Zain. So same company/activities, different name.
P.S. Celtel was originally founded by Dr. Mohamed “Mo” Ibrahim, a Sudanese-born British mobile communications entrepreneur turned philanthropist.
