The New Yorker’s Idea of Funny
Sometimes the jokes are obvious. Oftentimes they are a bit more complex and go over the heads of people. But then there are the “jokes” that are funny at all- the ones no one should laugh at and people should denounce. Like the cover of the latest New Yorker, depicting Michelle Obama as a militant Black Panther like person while Obama is dressed in traditional Muslim garb, burning the American Flag, with a framed photo of Osama on the wall.
Is this supposed to be funny?
Yes, I am taking a side on this. What type of culture do we live in that people defend this kind of nonsense? This wouldn’t be cool even if they came out with some ridiculousness like this pertaining to McCain and his Beer Princess Wife, Cindy.
In the United States, many folks already think Senator Obama is Muslim and that his wife is some sort of black militant. The New Yorker cover feeds into those misguided beliefs; it not entertaining or funny, satirical or otherwise.
What do you think? Should people be outraged by this or should everyone buy themselves a sense of humor?
